Drafting Version Homes for Orphaned ComputersI'm sure we've all passed by a computer put out on trash day destined for the landfill or we know someone who has an old computer stuffed away in a basement or closet that's just collecting dust. Why not put some of that older computer to good use? There are people who would like a computer but can't afford one, schools that may be short on funding and would greatly appreciate them as well etc. PlanWe will collect donations of old computers and then install Ubuntu Linux on them before we donate them to schools and individuals. What is Ubuntu Linux? It's a free operating system that is community based and takes it's name from a South African word that means "humanity towards others". We took our passion for free and open source software combined it with the philosophy of Ubuntu and this project was born.We plan on holding orientation sessions so that the new owners of these computers will be able to learn a bit about how to use their new computer before they take it home or use it in the classroom. ProgressThanks to Bob, a member of LUGOR (Linux Users Group of Rochester)(approve sites),we already have 7 complete systems with Ubuntu on them ready for a new life! ![]() Computers awaiting a new home with a deserving family With more on the way! Thanks again Bob for the donation and for going out of your way to make sure everything worked as well as installing Ubuntu on them. You've made it way too easy for us so far ;-) Getting InvolvedHow can you help? Well we obviously need donations of old computers for this to work but we also need volunteers who can help us with pickup and setting up these computers for their new homes.Community based organizations like churches, schools, libraries, etc that would be willing to help us distribute these computers and hold orientation sessions are needed as well.Suggestions are welcome, if you think you can of something to help out please contact us. |
