The 9.04 release is shaping up to be the best Ubuntu release ever. The Rochester Loco and Syracuse Loco are coming together for this special event in a combined public event celebrating the release. We are having a public demonstration and explanation of Jaunty Jackalope followed by a pizza party and install fest afterwards.

Public Awareness

The first half of the half will have presentation by the our Loco team members about Ubuntu, 9.04, and open source software. Demo systems will be set up for people to check out the new OS and see some of the diverse application of the operating system.

  • 2:00 PM Ubuntu Experience - Charles Proffit
  • 2:45 PM Ubuntu Road Map - Landon Jurgens
  • 3:30 PM Our Favorite Things - Ubuntu Community

Computers with Jaunty Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu will be available for hands-on experience. Other derivatives may also be present with enough computers being available.

Release Party

The second half people will break out there computers and get installing. Pizza and soda will be provided for approximately 50 attendees if more show we'll pass a hat to cover the costs. It is recommended to RSVP to rsvp@newyork-ubuntu.com to help gage attendance but not required.

There are a number of activities suggested

  • Key signing (don't forget some IDs and/or a utility bill)
  • Install Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 on computers.
  • Some Game Play (get out the Games Linux or no, all welcome)
  • Social time with other users

Recap

The combined launch party and public information session drew roughly 30 people including people from Albany, Binghamton, Ithaca, Rochester, Syracuse and Utica. This is the first statewide loco event in team history. The crowd was a mix of current Linux users and people interested in migrating to Ubuntu from Windows. Several people were there representing their community LUGs and there was excitement expressed by many about a statewide event.
